Black Hawk College livestock judges bring home Iowa hardware

The Black Hawk College East Campus Livestock Judging Team took top honors in the junior college division at the Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines, Iowa. Of the 25 teams participating, BHC teams took five of the top six Overall Team slots.

Five-member teams judged 10 classes and gave six sets of oral reasons for the College Division. All individual scores contributed to the team score. Each school was welcome to bring more than one team as well as extra individuals. All contestants were eligible for individual awards. Cattle classes were selected from Iowa Beef Expo entries and presented on halter if at all possible. Performance data was available and used where applicable.

The BHC team, “BHE Soph 1” finished High Team after earning High Team spots in the Reasons and Placings categories. Competing against 24 other junior college teams, the team came home National Champion Team finishing 59 total points ahead of 2nd place team “Casper Black” from Casper Community College, Wyoming. Other BHC teams followed placing 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th  Overall High teams.

The five students judging on the High team included: Caitlyn Bowyer of Sumner, Ill.; Tracey Clifford of Auburn, Ind.; Matthew Hahn of Minonk, Ill.; Liz Heaton of Toulon, Ill. and Hank LeVan of Woodstock, Ohio.

The “BHE Soph 2” team placing 3rd included: Cory Edge of Rosedale, Ind.; Tyler Gradert of Geneseo, Ill.; Tyler Johnson of Kimmell, Ind.; Deven King of Lansing, Mich.; and Trevor Kirkpatrick of Washington Court House, Ohio.

Team “BHE Fresh 1” made up of Tyler Dawson of Rushville, Ind.; Colten Geiger of Columbia City, Ind.; Maggie Neer of Urbana, Ohio; Savannah Speckhart of Princeville, Ill. and Hayden Wilder of Remington, Ind. placed 4th Overall.

Team “BHE Aggies 1” made up of Sam Bair of Elkhart, Iowa; John Clouse of Blackburg, Va.; Mallory Espenscheid of Traer, Iowa; Lauren Prill of Wichita, Kan. and John Reasor of Wildwood, Ga. finished 5th Overall.

Team “BHE Fresh 2” made up of Clayton Boyert of Seville, Ohio; Brandon Gruber of Woodbine, Md.; Kade Knapp of Stanwood, Iowa; Oliver Debnam of Gaithersburg, Md. and Kendall Stines of Springbrook, Iowa took the 6th Overall placing.

In Overall Individual Rankings, BHC had seven students place in the top 10 rankings out of 97 participants.

  • Liz Heaton of Toulon, Ill. – 2nd Overall, 1st Reasons, 4th Placings
  • Hank LeVan of Woodstock, Ohio – 3rd Overall, 3rd Placings, 8th Reasons
  • Tyler Dawson of Rushville, Ind. – 4th Overall, 2nd Placings
  • Matthew Hahn of Minonk, Ill. – 5th Overall, 2nd Reasons, 9th Placings
  • Tyler Gradert of Geneseo, Ill. – 7th Overall, 4th Reasons
  • Deven King of Lansing, Mich. – 8th Overall, 6th Reasons
  • Caitlyn Bowyer of Sumner, Ill.  – 10th Overall, 8th Placings

Rounding out the top 10 spots in Placings and Reasons were:

  • Kade Knapp of Stanwood, Iowa – 6th Placings
  • Cory Edge of Rosedale, Ind. – 7th Reasons
  • Savanna Speckhart of Princeville, Ill. – 10th Placing

Teams were coached by Dan Hoge and Jared Boyert.
