BHC hosting Jan. 5 Dearrel Bates Mississippi River Shootout

For the ninth year, the Black Hawk College women’s basketball program is hosting the Annual Dearrel Bates Mississippi River Shootout. All games will be Saturday, Jan. 5 in the upper and lower gyms in Building 3 at the college’s Quad-Cities Campus in Moline.

Dearrel was a longtime sports writer for the Quad-City Times. He was known for his reporting of high school sports in the Quad Cities. His untimely death in 2009 left a big hole in the hearts of many Quad Citians.

The shootout is an opportunity for seven Illinois teams to compete against seven Iowa teams. To date, the Illinois high school teams hold the record for the most shootout wins with seven and one tie.
