The ArtSpace Gallery at the Quad-Cities Campus is showcasing mixed media encaustic paintings and photographs by BHC art professor Zaiga Thorson in “Refuge in Four Seasons – Sabbatical Works by Zaiga Minka Thorson” starting Tuesday, Jan. 17 through Friday, Feb. 10.
Everyone is invited to attend an opening reception from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 adjacent to the ArtSpace Gallery. Light refreshments will be served.
“Nature has always soothed my soul,” Thorson says.
“Whether hiking through nearby Black Hawk State Park, enjoying Lake Leelanau in northern Michigan or the aquamarine seawater surrounding the isle of Capri in Italy, nature continues to serve as a catalyst for quiet reflection and stokes my desire to capture the spirit of a place or passage in time.
“In these oil, mixed media encaustic paintings and photographs, formal aspects of organic and geometric, representational and abstract combined in an ambiguous space serve as visual metaphors for not only the cycle of spring, summer, autumn and winter, but also the rhythms of life.
“Nature inspires me, although it is not my aim to recreate it, but rather to celebrate its mysteries and contradictions as a reflection of self. ”
The ArtSpace Gallery is located on the first floor of Building 4 at the Quad-Cities Campus.
