Black Hawk College students will benefit from the generosity of more than 500 donors who contributed nearly $130,000 to the college’s two foundations during Fall 2011.
Students majoring in accounting, education and equine science as well as sheet metal workers wanting to further their education will all benefit from new scholarships established this semester.
The $130,000 was generated by two major events and a campaign that reached out to individuals and businesses in the Black Hawk College District.
BOOT SCOOTIN’ BARN DANCE AND BBQ – 2011
The Ag Arena at the East Campus was filled with the sounds of country music and the smell of hickory smoked barbecue on Saturday, Oct. 22 as 250 people attended the first-ever Boot Scootin’ Barn Dance and BBQ.
BHC equine students led tours of the college’s horse stables, and visitors kicked up their heels with line dancing and two-step lessons.
The event raised more than $53,000 for the new Equine Endowed Scholarship Fund.
The money was generated by ticket sales, a live auction that raised $11,400, a silent auction that raised $3,775, two $10,000 donations from Peoples National Bank of Kewanee and the Verlin and Joan Jackson Foundation, a $5,000 donation from Cargill/Nutrena and additional donations.
The successful event has allowed the Black Hawk College East Foundation to establish several new equine scholarships:
• Peoples National Bank of Kewanee Endowed Equine Scholarship
• Verlin and Joan Jackson Foundation Endowed and Annual Equine Scholarships (3)
• Equine Endowed Scholarship
• Cargill Equine Scholarship
“This kind of success would not have been possible without the generous and kind support of the local community, including business and industry, and the Black Hawk College faculty and staff,” said Liz Breedlove, executive director of the Black Hawk College East Foundation.

STEP UP FOR STUDENTS CAMPAIGN – 2011
Donations from 103 individuals and businesses will help 120 students next year at the Quad-Cities Campus. The annual Step Up for Students Campaign raised $74,000 and generated three new scholarships that will be awarded in Fall 2012.
People who have never before donated to the Black Hawk College Quad-Cities Foundation stepped up and made up 70 percent of the donors to the campaign. Additionally, 100 percent of the foundation’s 12-member board donated to the campaign and volunteered their time to seek donations.
A portion of the money raised during the campaign is going toward a green roof on the college’s new Sustainable Technologies Building. The facility, which will house the college’s new Materials Science Program, is currently under construction with completion anticipated in April 2012.
“This campaign truly is an investment where donors realize their return through an educated community and a strong workforce,” said Shelly Wells Cain, executive director of the Black Hawk College Quad-Cities Foundation.
“We also are thankful for the countless hours members of our community and the 27 Black Hawk College employees on the committee devoted to the campaign,” she said.
HAWK HUSTLE – 2011 The 5th Annual Hawk Hustle, a four-mile cross country run/walk over the rolling hills and scenic trails of the Quad-Cities Campus, attracted 189 participants on Saturday, Nov. 12.
The race supports fitness initiatives at the Quad-Cities Campus. To date, Hawk Hustle contributions have been used to purchase two elliptical machines and a leg extension machine in the Fitness Center and mats for health and physical education classes.
Coordinating the Hawk Hustle would not be possible without the many volunteers who spent their Saturday morning on campus helping with the race.
