BHC collects items for soldiers overseas, homeless in QC

In November 2010, the Military Students and Veterans Club (MSVC) at Black Hawk College conducted a holiday care package drive for soldiers and homeless veterans.

MSVC members, other BHC students and BHC employees donated to the cause. Pictured with the donations are MSVC president Chad Stephenson (left) and club member Ricardo Cardoso (right), both of Moline.

The care packages included snacks, toiletries, playing cards, games, holiday cards signed by BHC students and employees, and cards handmade by Cub Scout Pack 101 of Erie.

The packages were sent to:

  • SPC Jacob Gunn, Afghanistan
  • 2nd Lt. Bill Hayes, Afghanistan
  • Staff Sgt. Kevin Ott, Afghanistan
  • 1st Sgt. Tadd Jennings, Iraq

Gunn, Hayes and Ott are former Black Hawk College students.

Donations of winter hats, scarves, gloves/mittens, sweatshirts, socks and toiletries went to a local homeless veterans outreach center. Numerous hats and scarves were handmade by Frances Moon, the wife of Matthew Moon, an HVAC mechanic at the college and Korean War veteran.
